Red Roses – Their Meaning and History
Red roses are the most popular of all roses. They are a timeless classical flower that everyone loves to admire. There are many different types of red roses to choose from, and buying them often signifies love, romance and passion. They are ideal for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
The look of the rose and the amazing aroma it produces is fantastic, and can help to create an amazing feature. There are over 100 different species of the Rose, and it is believed to be over 35 million years old. It is possible to grow red roses anywhere in the world, and this has led to many different hybrids being born. Selecting the correct species will determine how well it grows in the current climate; however, fantastic roses are possible even by amateur growers. Red Roses History
The Romans soon began to understand that there was far more to red roses than its beauty, they learnt that captivating the scent produced incredible perfumes. They soon experimented with different types of red roses, and learnt how to produce hybrids. Although this amazing flower was admired by the Romans, it also brought incredible sadness to some people. Farmers were forced to grow red roses rather than food, to satisfy the demand that was being asked for. Emperors would use the rose petals in their bathes, fountains and pools. They would also be used for medicines, perfumes and celebrations meaning that many roses were needed. Throughout history red roses have been an emblem of strength and pride. The red rose is England’s national flower, and the countries rugby team uses it as their emblem. During the 15th century in England two opposing counties were fighting for control over the country. York was represented by the pure white rose, and Lancaster wore the proud red rose. The friction that was caused by these two counties, began the phrase “War of the Roses”.
Red Roses Symbolism
Red roses are still very symbolic today, and are the most bought flower in the world. There are two main groups of the flower which can be bought. Old roses were the original cultivation, and were produced before the 1800′s modern roses are the styles that are made today. There are several different types of red roses available and the color and shade of the red varies within different species. Dark red roses are often bought to signify passion and lust, where as lighter reds are given for friendship and trust.
Often it is believed that single red roses are given at the beginning of a relationship. Large bouquets are chosen as the relationship progresses. However, there are no set rules, and you should choose and give the roses because you enjoy them.
